Original WW2 U.S. 3rd Infantry Div. Painted Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Firestone Liner Set For Sale

WWII U.S. 3rd Infantry Div. Painted Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Firestone Liner Set

This is an original WWII U.S. 3rd Infantry Division M1 helmet set. The wartime painted markings have been authenticated with the assistance of advanced digital microscopy. The paint's micro cracking, which most forgers have yet to correctly replicate, is readily apparent under magnification. The McCord manufactured fixed loop helmet shell's heat stamp of 630B dates the helmet's production to September 1943. The original owner appears to have used the helmet as a wash basin, as it exhibits a thin layer of soap residue throughout. Unfortunately, the original OD#3 (khaki) chinstrap has torn away from its fixed loops, however it is still present. Interestingly, we can see where the chinstrap was once secured at the rear of the shell due to paint discoloration. The helmet comes complete with its original Firestone manufactured liner. Penciled on one side of the liner is a crude 3rd ID emblem, showcasing its long history together with the steel shell as a set. The rear of the liner looks to have intentionally been scratched with the shape of a diamond. Like the 101st Airborne Division, the 3rd ID marked their helmets with the suits of playing cards to denote different battalions ahead of Operation Dragoon, the amphibious invasion of Southern France. While the spade, heart, and club have been positively identified to the First, Second, and Third Battalions, respectively, of the the 3rd ID's 7th Infantry Regiment, the diamond is believed to be associated with the Regimental Headquarters; original wartime photos exist of 3rd ID men also wearing diamonds on the backs of their helmets during the Battle of Anzio in Italy. The liner features non-painted steel A-washers, dating its production from late-1942 to mid-1943. The liner's khaki suspension is damaged throughout. It comes complete with its original double wire headband, neckband, and leather liner strap remnants. Like the suspension, itself, the accessories all exhibit consistent wear and tear.
