Original Early-WW2 U.S. Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Rayon Hawley Liner (1941 Set) For Sale

Early-WWII U.S. Officer's Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Rayon Hawley Liner (1941 Set)

This original early-WWII U.S. M1 helmet set is identified to a Major H. W. Wurtzler of the 149th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Battalion Quartermaster. We were unable to locate much information on Major Wurtzler, as officer records are often sparse, however this helmet was originally sourced from Alum Bank, Pennsylvania. During the war, there was a Major H. W. Wurtzler stationed at the Ordnance Depot in Letterkenny, Pennsylvania, which is less than an hour and a half from Alum Bank. He is mentioned in the book Italian Prisoners of War in Pennsylvania, by Flavio G. Conti and Allan R. Perry. There remains a substantial research opportunity for the helmet's new owner. Both the McCord steel shell and Hawley liner are ID'd to Major Wurtzler, showcasing their long history together as a set. The fixed loop helmet shell's considerably early heat stamp of 49B 3 dates its production to mid-1941 - months before the United States entered the war. It retains its original factory paint, cork texture, and OD#3 (khaki) chinstraps. The chinstraps feature the early cast-brass buckle, carried over from the M1917A1 helmet. The helmet's early style fixed loops remain strong and intact. The Hawley manufactured helmet liner retains aluminum washers, a first pattern rayon suspension, and a rarely-intact stationary leather liner strap, which also date the liner's production to mid-1941. The rayon suspension is strong and intact. It comes complete with its original rayon headband and a recently installed cutdown neckband.
