Original Early-WW2 U.S. Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Rayon Hawley Liner Set (1941-42) For Sale

Early-WWII U.S. Fixed Loop M1 Helmet & Rayon Hawley Liner Set (1941-42)

This original early-WWII U.S. M1 helmet set is named to a "Frank Barnes". Unfortunately, with such a common name, positively identifying the original owner may be difficult. That said, this helmet set was acquired at a swap meet in Peculiar, Missouri. There was a Kansas City-native, Frank L. Barnes, located just 35 minutes away, who served in the Marine Corps during WWII. The McCord manufactured fixed loop helmet shell's heat stamp of 191B dates its production to June 1942. It retains its original factory paint, cork texture, and tattered OD#3 (khaki) chinstraps. The chinstraps feature brass hardware, with the "raised-bar" buckle. The fixed loops remain strong and intact. When we originally acquired this helmet there was a post-war sticker applied on its front, which we painstakingly removed without altering the original finish. Imprinted in the steel shell's interior is the fabric pattern of its Hawley liner, showcasing their long history together as a set. The Hawley liner exhibits aluminum washers, a first pattern rayon suspension, and a damaged stationary leather liner strap, which date the liner's production to mid-1941. The rayon suspension is strong and intact. It comes complete with its original rayon headband and neckband.
